Awards
to
Disaster-Affected Businesses Top $1 Million
Posted 11 November 2010
Awards handed out to
Iowa businesses affected by this year's natural disasters have topped
the $1 million mark, officials with the Iowa Department of Economic
Development announced.
The state's Iowans Helping Iowans program can assist businesses that
suffered damages in the 2010 natural disasters, which included severe
flooding in Ames and other parts of Iowa.
"We are pleased the state has been able to get help quickly to
disaster-affected businesses," said IDED Director Bret Mills.
"Financial help is still available for businesses that have not yet
applied."
The program has granted 35 awards so far, totaling $1,007,297. Up to
$7.5 million is available for business assistance.
The following is a breakdown of the number of awards to date by county:
Jones (4)
Jasper (5)
Jackson (1)
Hamilton (1)
Fayette (2)
Delaware (2)
Cherokee (4)
Wapello (1)
Story (9)
Polk (5)
Monroe (1)
Businesses affected by natural disasters in 34 counties eligible for
federal individual assistance are also eligible for this program. Those
counties include the following: Appanoose, Black Hawk, Cherokee,
Clayton, Decatur, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton,
Howard, Humboldt, Ida, Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Lucas,
Lyon, Mahaska, Marion, O'Brien, Osceola, Polk, Ringgold, Sioux, Story,
Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren, Webster, and Wright counties.
Businesses are still being encouraged to apply for assistance if they
suffered damages from a natural disaster this year. The program has a
streamlined approval process to get help to business owners as soon as
possible. Businesses must first be approved for a disaster-related loan
by an eligible lender in order to qualify for the program. Businesses
do not need to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) or the Small Business Administration (SBA) to be eligible for
the Iowans Helping Iowans business assistance program.
