Upper
Iowa
Steps
into World of Social Media
Posted 19 February
2010
Upper Iowa University has taken a big step into the world of social
media. The University’s redesigned website, launched February 15,
includes a new blogging site by students at Upper Iowa. The revamped
UIU website also features direct access to and expanded use of
Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.
“As our University ascends and continues to grow in the number of Upper
Iowa students and alumni around the world, it is crucial that we
maximize our use of social media to connect us, help us communicate,
and build our appreciation of UIU as a truly global community,” said
UIU President Alan G. Walker.
“Social media has become a significantly important tool for the public
as they update their profiles, ‘fan,’ ‘friend’ and tweet each other. In
2009, a Deloitte survey showed that 57 percent of the American public
uses a social networking site with nearly half of them consulting it
every day, ” said Melik Peter Khoury, UIU senior vice president for
strategy and chief marketing officer. “By strategically using social
media, Upper Iowa can strengthen its relationship with existing markets
and gain significant exposure to potential markets.”
UIU blogs include a reflection on moments in African American history
during Black History Month and UIU students discussing aspects of UIU
residential life, athletics, Greek life, and preparation for the
students’ alternative spring break in Belize. In the near future, blogs
will begin about wildlife management, writing advice, technological
advances, graduate studies, and international studies.
Other website enhancements offer better navigation, easier access to
information for specific audiences, and clarification of the various
Upper Iowa educational modalities of a residential campus, distance
education, and educational centers in the United States, abroad, and on
U.S. military bases.
“Our social media will showcase the broad range of experiences
available to all types of students who attend Upper Iowa. We want to
illustrate our diversity and the breadth of what we offer. ” said
Monica Bayer Heaton, executive director of communications and
marketing. “We’ve had an enthusiastic response from UIU students,
faculty and staff to blogging, and we look forward to increasing our
efforts in these important areas.”
