NICC Wins 2009 Impact Award for Economic Development
Posted 18 February 2010
Winneshiek County Development, Inc. awarded the 2009 Impact Award to Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to recognize the economic contribution of the college in Winneshiek County. The organization honored NICC for its increased enrollment, proactive work in business and industry training, assistance to area businesses in Winneshiek County, and the college’s building projects at the Calmar campus.

NICC has a strong economic development presence in Winneshiek County and throughout northeast Iowa. NICC collaborates with local and state agencies to provide customized training in a variety of work areas, including manufacturing, welding, customer service, computers, Workplace Lean and many others. Winneshiek County employers have worked with NICC to design customized training programs for their employees because training makes businesses more competitive.

Ken Vande Berg, NICC vice president of economic development, said that receiving the honor speaks volumes about the strong relationship the college enjoys with Winneshiek County. “I think receiving this award is a real positive statement about the work we do, and this is good recognition for the college,” said Vande Berg. “Winneshiek County and the development board were very supportive of our bond issue and this is a nice vote of confidence.” Vande Berg said that NICC is becoming increasingly visible in the region because of its economic work and greater awareness in the community.

Winneshiek County Development, Inc. and the Decorah Jobs organization work diligently in an effort to make sure existing and prospective businesses are accommodated within the City of Decorah and throughout the county.
