National
Association
of Professional Women Names NICC Upward Bound Director a
VIP Woman of the Year
Posted 17 February
2010
In January, the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) named
TRiO-Upward Bound Director Katherine Whitsitt one of 207 professionals
to receive the VIP Women of the Year award. Whitsitt provides
leadership to Upward Bound at Northeast Iowa Community College’s Calmar
campus. TRiO programs serve low-income, first generation and disabled
students, and the program assists them through the educational pipeline
from middle school through graduate school.
VIP Women of the Year are selected in recognition of the strides they
have made in their respective industries, their outstanding leadership,
their professional achievements and for displaying the highest level of
support of NAPW's commitment to networking and community involvement.
NAPW, an organization with over 150,000 members, awarded Whitsitt with
the honor on Jan. 18.
Whitsitt has served as the Calmar campus TRiO-Upward Bound director
since 2006, and is the current elected president of the Iowa chapter of
the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program
Personnel organization, a state association of colleges and
universities in the state that embody our nation’s commitment to the
dream of education for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic
background or economic circumstances.
Upward Bound is a federally-funded education program and part of the
TRIO programs, the largest discretionary education programs funded
through the U.S. Department of Education. “Education is my passion,
especially creating opportunities for those marginalized by the
traditional educational system. Advocacy on behalf of individuals who
are not afforded equal opportunities to education and through
education, is my driving force, as this is the pathway to opportunity
for all,” said Whitsitt.
Beginning with the creation of Upward Bound through the Higher
Education Act of 1965, Congress has committed to helping low-income
Americans enter and graduate from college. While student financial aid
programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education,
TRiO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural
barriers to higher education.
NAPW is an exclusive network for professional women to interact,
exchange ideas, educate, network and empower. NAPW members enjoy a
wealth of resources and services dedicated to the enhancement,
empowerment and promotion of their careers.
