NICC Celebrating National TRiO Day this Month
Posted 16 February 2010
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) will celebrate National TRiO Day through student events at Calmar and Peosta that are designed to focus attention on the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives. At the Peosta campus, TRiO-Student Support Services and TRiO-Upward Bound members will share their stories with the public on Feb. 17, and Calmar campus TRiO-Upward Bound students will be volunteering their services at the NICC College Goal Sunday host site on Feb. 20. This year, National TRiO Day falls on Saturday, Feb. 27.

NICC is home to two TRiO programs, TRiO-Student Support Services (TRiO-SSS) and TRiO-Upward Bound (TRiO-UB). The TRiO-SSS program, located at NICC’s Peosta campus, provides assistance to low income, first generation college students and individuals with disabilities who are working toward a college degree at NICC. The TRiO-UB program is located at both Calmar and Peosta and serves high school students from low-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. Both programs seek to provide supports that assist students in enrolling in, and ultimately graduating from, institutions of post-secondary education.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, students in the Peosta TRiO programs will share their stories with others in an effort to raise awareness of the difficulties they face. This is free and open to the public.

“This our chance to thank NICC for supporting TRiO
programs on our campus,” said Cindy Benedict, TRiO-SSS
director.  “We encourage everyone to stop by and meet some of
our students from 11-1 p.m. to hear their stories.”

Students in the Calmar campus TRiO-UB program are participating in a community service activity, College Goal Sunday, on Feb. 20. This is a statewide initiative through the Iowa College Access Network that is designed to help students complete the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) application. The day gives students an opportunity to give back to their communities and assist others on their path to post-secondary education. TRiO-
UB seniors and their families will utilize the services provided through College Goal Sunday to complete their own FAFSA applications as well.

The TRiO programs at NICC make a dramatic impact on their students’ academic, personal and career success. In the TRiO-SSS program, nearly 90 percent of participating students achieve good academic standing at the end of the year, and 67 percent earn their college degree and/or transfer within three years. The Calmar and Peosta TRiO programs build strong connections with their students, and students enter and stay in college with higher rates of success.
