Chamber Honors NICC with Large Business of the Year Award
Posted 15 February
2010
The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce (DACC) honored Northeast Iowa
Community College (NICC) with the 2010 Large Business of the Year Award
at the chamber’s annual gala on Feb. 6. Business of the Year awards are
presented annually to the best small business, large business and a
business professional through a nomination and selection process by
DACC members.
The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce started the Business of the Year
awards three years ago to honor the efforts of member businesses. This
year there were 27 nominees in the three categories. Decorah Chamber of
Commerce officials said that NICC received the honor for its
contributions to the community, and its work to provide assistance to
area students during tough economic times.
“It's hard to imagine our community without the presence of NICC,
especially given the economic challenges we've experienced the past 18
months,” said Nikki Brevig, DACC executive director. “With the number
of displaced workers on the rise, NICCencountered record enrollment
numbers as community members returned to school to upgrade their skills
in hopes of securing new employment. NICC also provides an invaluable
service to our high school students who are seeking educational
opportunities beyond what is offered within the district. The college
adds considerable value to the area as an employer and an institution
of higher education,” Brevig said.
Record numbers of northeast Iowans are attending NICC, according to
official district-wide enrollment reports. NICC is seeing a dramatic
increase in students’ credit hour enrollment, from 45,037 credit hours
to 51,219, an increase of 14 percent compared to the same period in
2009. A record headcount of 5398 students, an increase of 10 percent
from spring 2009, contributed to the higher credit hour figures. This
spring marks the third consecutive semester of double-digit enrollment
growth. For more information on NICC programs and services, visit www.nicc.edu.
