NICC
Student
Delegation to Meet with Legislators
Posted 26 January
2010
A Northeast Iowa
Community College (NICC) student delegation will visit Des Moines on
Jan. 28-29 to attend a state legislative conference. The NICC students
seek to increase awareness about the key role Iowa’s community colleges
have in economic growth and education. The students, who are campus
leaders at the college’s Calmar and Peosta campuses, will also lobby
northeast Iowa district legislators in an effort to stem further cuts
in funding to the colleges. The Iowa Association of Community College
Trustees (IACCT) sponsors the trip.
NICC students active in the college’s leadership program, iMPACT, will
speak to their respective northeast Iowa district leaders during the
two-day conference. iMPACT is a student leadership group at NICC that
plans and organizes extracurricular activities, coordinates community
service projects and works closely with the Student Life, Diversity and
Leadership offices at both campuses.
NICC invited all state senators and representatives from districts in
northeast Iowa to speak to the student delegation during the
conference. “It’s important for us to let our legislators know
what impact their decisions could have on us,” stated Samantha Barness,
iMPACT president. “Iowa already has shifted a lot of the burden on to
the backs of students. Iowa community college tuition is already ninth
highest in the nation.”
Barness added that Iowa students have more debt after college
graduation than students from any other state. “Community colleges are
supposed to be about making higher education affordable for all,” she
added.
