Presents "Discover Your Spark!" in Decorah January 24
Posted 18 January
2010
All parents, youth, educators, youth leaders, and community members are
invited to an event called “Discover Your Spark” on January 24th from
4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Country Inn and Suites on Highway 9 in Decorah.
This event is not just for mentoring participants, but for youth and
adults to come and find their spark. The event will be followed
by a soup supper beginning at 5:30 hosted by Building Bridges Through
Mentoring, the Winneshiek county-based mentoring program. Jill
Hollowell and Kathy Schwartzhoff, Mentoring Coordinators at Helping
Services, will facilitate the discovery along with a few other local
voices. Please RSVP to Jill Hollowell by Jan. 20th for needs of
food and materials. This event is part of the many activities
going on celebrating National Mentoring Month.
A Spark is a special quality, skill, or interest that lights us
up and fills us with joy and energy. A Spark could be in the areas of
art, sports, helping others, caring for animals, starting a business,
writing, or reading and can lead to a future hobby or career. The
Spark concept, developed by Search Institute, is research-based with
the premise that when people recognize their spark, a shift can take
place from the feeling of just getting by to an energized state of
glowing.
Mentors in the program spend 4-5 hours per month with their youth doing
activities such as visiting the library, hiking, sledding, or
participating in community service projects. Adults also have
another short-term time option to volunteer as a Mentor For A
Day. Mentors For A Day agree to be at mentoring events as they
fit their schedule and agree to be a buddy for the youth for that 3-4
hour time span. To become involved in mentoring experiences,
contact Kathy Schwartzhoff at Helping Services 563-387-1720 or visit: http://www.helpingservices.org.
