Untreated
Wastewater in Mississippi Tributary
Posted 21 July 2008
Over 2,000 gallons
of untreated wastewater accidentally found its way into a tributary of
the Mississippi River in Lansing earlier this week.
Due to mechanical problems, two pumps at a wastewater pumping station
on Fourth Street in Lansing failed Thursday morning, July 17. As a
result, its estimated nearly 2,500 gallons of untreated wastewater
discharged from the city's system. Lansing city workers shut down the
pumping station and replaced the pumps.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is cautioning people, as well
as their pets, to avoid the tributary through the weekend.
The City of Lansing is in the process of building a new wastewater
treatment facility.
