Free
Skin Cancer Screening Today
Posted 16 July 2008
Winneshiek Medical Center is offering a free
skin cancer screening from 4 until 7 p.m. this afternoon, Wednesday,
July 16.
Diane Lansink, a pediatric nurse practitioner who specializes in
dermatology, will examine pediatric and adult patients for suspicious
moles that could indicate cancerous or pre-cancerous cells.
If a suspicious mole is found, patients will be encouraged to make an
appointment with their health care provider for further testing.
Lansink says, "Skin screenings are a necessary, but sometimes
overlooked, part of wellness. It is critical to have any skin changes
examined, and to keep a record of moles and freckles. If changes are
noted from year to year, testing can be done to determine if the area
in question is cancerous before it spreads to other parts of the body."
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most
common of all cancers and accounts for nearly half of all cancers in
the United States. Currently, more than 1 million skin cancers are
diagnosed each year in the United States, which is more than cancers of
the prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries, and pancreas
combined.
The free skin cancer screening is by appointment only. To make an
appointment, call Decorah Clinic at 563-382-9671.
