Traffic
Enforcement Program Along Highways 20 and 30
Posted 10 July 2008
On July 17, 2008, 164 Iowa law enforcement agencies from 27 counties in
central Iowa have been asked to combine resources to conduct a special
enforcement project designed to reduce accident related injuries and
deaths on two major state highways and their adjacent roadways.
This special enforcement project, known as Operation Double Aught will
not only concentrate enforcement along state Highways 20 and 30, but
also along roadways surrounding these major highways. Highway 30
spans the state of Iowa from Missouri Valley to Clinton, Iowa and
Highway 20 spans the state of Iowa from Sioux City to Dubuque,
Iowa. Officers will be targeting those violations that present
the greatest risk of accidents which include, but are not limited to:
* Impaired Driving
* Safety Belt and Child Safety Seat Violations
* Stop Sign and Stop Light Violations
* Excessive Speed
* Aggressive Driving
This enforcement project is part of an ongoing effort by Iowa law
enforcement to reduce the number of serious injury and fatality
accidents on Iowa roadways. Two of the most effective ways
to accomplish this is through increased public awareness and
enforcement. These methods have proven successful in helping
increasing Iowa’s seatbelt usage rate to nearly 92% and by aiding in
the reduction of the number of accidents involving impaired drivers and
other related violations.
A similar enforcement project was held on June 5, 2008, along US
Highway 61, in 14 eastern Iowa counties. During that project 101
officers issued over 1,100 contacts; to include 162 seatbelt/child
safety seat violations, 491 speed violations, 2 arrests for drunk
driving and 2 arrests for drugs.
