Update,
Affects of Postville Immigration Raid
Posted 8 July 2008
Following the federal immigration raid at Postville's Agriprocessors
plant May 12, 304 of the arrested immigrants are currently serving jail
time instead of being deported. In a surprise action, many of those
arrested were sentenced to spend five months in jail before being sent
home.
The affect of having over 400 residents exit the Postville community is
beginning to show in the town's business district. Most business owners
are reporting diminishing sales. Those businesses who catered
specifically to the Hispanic community are the hardest hit. Many expect
they may have to close their doors for good in the coming weeks.
Changes at the Agriprocessor meatpacking plant has contributed to a
shortage and limited availability of kosher meat across the nation.
Rising fuel prices has also only made the problem worse for meat
distributors.
Two Agriprocessors Inc. supervisors, Juan Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza, 35,
and Martin De La Rosa-Loera, 43, arrested last week will remain in
federal custody until their trials. The men were charged with aiding
and abetting illegal workers at the plant to possess and use fraudulent
identity documents. They were both upper level supervisors at the plant.
